A Broken Heart

A Broken Heart

written by: Phyllis Souza

It’s Valentine’s Day. The rain holds off, but the clouds look ready to burst. The sun burns hot, like a volcano about to erupt.

So many hearts are broken, yet no one seems to notice. Everyone acts as if everything is fine, even when it’s not.

Then it happens: a Valentine’s Day card with a metallic gold heart pierced by an arrow. You set the card on the mantel above the fireplace.

You stare at the card, wondering why now.

After a moment’s thought, you put the card in a junk drawer. Other cards are there too: birthday, Christmas, and now Valentine’s Day.

Time passes, but you keep the card.

You feel lonely. You miss their smile.

Are you tired of eating alone?

Night falls. You sit on the couch in the dark. You don’t turn on the TV because you’re tired of the bad news. Nothing feels right. Life seems to be falling apart. What will you do?

Turn on the light. Switch on the TV. There’s good news, too.

Take the Valentine card from the drawer, hold it to your chest, and say, “I forgive.”

Love could be just a phone call away.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
