An Encounter

An Encounter

written by: Arjun Dhungana

translated by: Suman Pokhrel

On the evening of the fourteenth of February,
unintentionally
I was there at the vegetable store.

You used to say, that
you didn’t like the bitter taste,
but, you kept picking bitter gourds
making heart and soul bitter.

I, a hater of peppery taste
kept my fingers running on the basket of hot chilly
until my eyes started burning.

The whole night of the fourteenth of February,
I kept floundering slumberless
thinking, whether you slept peacefully.
