Art Hanlon was born in Brooklyn, New York. After serving in the Marine Corps, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, earning a B.A. in American history and English, and an M.A. in journalism. Hanlon worked as a newspaper reporter, a country blues musician, a theater set carpenter, a technical writer, an associate book editor for Copper Canyon Press and an associate poetry editor for Narrative Magazine before returning to the University of California Riverside at Palm Desert for an MFA in Creative Writing. His song, 'Spokane,' won first prize in the 2005 Tumbleweed Music Festival in Richland, Washington. His essays and fiction have appeared in Surfing Illustrated, Art Access, Narrative Magazine, Coachella Review, Please See Me and Kelp Journal. Hanlon's essay "The Circle Game" won the Shelter in Place competition for Kelp Journal. His essay, "The Brilliant Present," was included in the Special Mention section of the 2019 Pushcart Prize Anthology. Hanlon’s short story 'salmon.king' was nominated for inclusion in the 2022 Best of the Net Anthology. Art Hanlon lives in the Pacific Northwest with his family.
