Before the Blameless Sea

Before the Blameless Sea

written by: William Wright, Jr.

I was never alone
In my fear of the incoming tide
Of the churning blood brine
Breaking over the seawall

We’re all fighting for higher ground
In the fury and daze
Of a dizzying melee
Crawling scarred to the summit

As all sane and solid ground
Melts away in the surf,
Igniting a war
For precious isles of mud

I fade among the faces
Of a tussling mob
Enfolded in a fist
Breach loaded and locked

Wandering through the heat
Of the uphill skirmish
Before the blameless sea
Claims the shreds of our world
