Behind My Eyes
written by: Mara
The universe is stuck between my eyes and behind this door.
Get in, we’re driving up north, where the air tastes clear, where the wind whistles merrily, and where nightfall never comes. I’m sorry I went without you.
Don’t you stop here, open the window, stay for a while, linger forever. Don’t miss me too much.
I’ve invited you a long time ago, when we were young and our eyes were empty, and now it’s time to leave, do you hear me?
“Why,” you ask, and I cannot give you the answer you want, but you know, oh, you know it as good as I do. The sun is going to rise tomorrow without me, too. Never forget, it will love you for much longer than I could. So darling, feel its warm embrace lingering on your face, aching to be closer, and dare to stay a while and think of me.
Birds still chirp and children still die, and you can still make coffee in the morning. It’s going to go on for an eternity and another until we all explode into dust, and you will be there and you will be loved. Don’t wait too long, drive as far as you can, save the passenger seat for me.
All of these roads were built long before me, and they won’t remember me for long. Open your eyes, let raindrops consume you and tsunamis sing you to sleep, live as long as you can, and longer.
Look me in the eyes and see what’s behind them; that’s where I keep the universe for you.
