Black Orchid

Black Orchid

written by: Maliya Denise Wilmore

You are a dark beauty,
Unlike the others with their vibrant hues—
They bloom together, easy to love,
Soft petals, bright and ordinary.

Yet here you stand in your shadowed grace,
A quiet storm, a mystery,
Strong, alluring—unshaken.

Most don’t know how to handle a flower like you.
They do not pick you,
Not crimson like the rose,
Nor sapphire like the violet,
Not delicate like the lily—
But hauntingly rare
The black orchid.

Yet you are too beautiful for this world,
Crafted to stand apart.
Haven’t you heard?
Dark is lovely.
Embracing every shade of you,
Unapologetic, unyielding.
You.
You.
You.

Oh, how pretty you bloom.

Never mind those who turn away—
You are not alienated,
You are originated.
Some flowers were never meant
For careless hands.

You may be hard to understand,
But not everyone was born
With the gift of grace,
Of magnetism,
Of strength,
Of beauty,
Of complexity
That does not bend to fear.

Oh, my dark beauty,
Bloom for me well—
In the abyss of your colors.

I know your seedlings waver,
Rooted in uncertainty.
But even in shadows,
You grow strong.

You are favored—
The night chooses its own.
