Bonfire of Resolve

Bonfire of Resolve

written by: Lamont Neal

Leaden gray skies,
distance shrouded in mist
The fall descends upon us, stretched arm,
holding hands with winter
Darkness inevitable, the sun is waning
No death throes,
still pulled toward inevitable rest.

Less than half-lit canvas, glow only in the center
Night opens the door and quickly slams it behind
The sky cannot help you,
starved in its own neglect.
Grab a torch of your making
and kindle the light inside.

Burn with the fires
of resolve that will not stop.
Lift your lantern high,
delineating future,
steady steps through bleak half dead days.
Bonfire fueled by the resolve stacked within
flames the fervor of the fight,
and that which we protect.

Only the prodigal light candles in sunshine.
Still hold it in your hand, lifesaver, salvation,
when you see your sun steadily set.
Fire is freedom to one engulfed in darkness
can’t delay when it’s time to strike the match.
