dark nights, seeing bats

our veins like starlight, mending

I could fly again

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Illustration description: A black and red image. The central black area acts as backdrop to the words of the haiku, placed above centre in red Bickham Script Pro 3 Bold font. In the top left corner, the darkness ripples, curls, and disintegrates into shapes reminiscent of a bat wing, as well as smaller bats in flight. The background revealed resembles a cloudy, red sky, with a texture like vertical rain. The right side of the image is occupied by 2 figures, one with eyes closed, appearing to lay their head on the chest of the other. This one’s face shows black lipsticked lips smiling slightly and a gentle gaze resting on the first figure. The second figure also has long hair streaming down either side of an otherwise invisible body, blending with the hair of the first figure. One tendril sweeps and curls under the words of the haiku. Each figure seems to be marked with a bright red star right over their heart. The figures also seem to reveal the rainy, red sky as figures cut into the black night.
