Do Not Go Meekly Into That Dark Night

Do Not Go Meekly Into That Dark Night

written by: Ken Gosse

On Halloween it seemed obscene
to not accept a dare
and then display, to friends’ dismay,
an air of laissez-faire.
Just close your eyes and realize
the demons in your mind
will disappear so you won’t hear
the screams they leave behind.

Out late at night, an awful fright
would take them by surprise.
They chanced to view not one but two
bright red and glowing eyes
behind the trees through which a breeze
was wafting dark perfume;
its sulf’rous stench made their guts wrench—
the fumes of dread and gloom.

A graveyard’s not the wisest spot
to venture late at night,
but none returned, so we’ve not learned
if they all died of fright.
