I Am Not Superstitious

I Am Not Superstitious

written by: Viji Narayan

No I am not superstitious
With my university degrees and
Stylish designer outfits
You must have known that!

Only when my partner
Hands over the salt shaker
At our dinner time, to me
I try to avoid it,
Who wants another argument anyways,
No, I am not superstitious
Please trust me!

I don’t let my maid
Sweep the floor
After sunset for sure
Not because I am superstitious
I want to instil
Punctuality in her-
Forget about that one time
When I did not sweep the
Broken glasses from the floor at night and
Accidentally stepped on it the next morning !

I don’t let my kids start a journey
If a black cat crosses their way-
I am allergic to cat hair and
Do not want my kids to start a journey
With their mother’s allergy in their mind!
Does it sound illogical?
Well many things that humans do
Are totally illogical!
So accept my logic and believe me
I am absolutely not superstitious!

My grandma told me
An old lady keeps making vada in the moon
Bless her poor soul
Now I believe she visits me as a crow!
It is comforting to think
That she visits me as a crow at least
Who never bothered to visit me when alive!
Remember I am a totally emancipated lady
No superstition can make me emaciated!

Oh did you see the car my son purchased?
A sturdy beast with all safety features
Oh that lemon and red chillies hanging in front?
It is not that I believe the lemon and chili can do a better job
Than the safety features designed by
Those clever design engineers-
It is only that I want my children
To uphold our culture!

Don’t you mind that glaring glance from my son,
Just believe me
When I tell you that
I am not superstitious!
