And Now That I Have Filled My Glass

And Now That I Have Filled My Glass

written by: Francisco Bravo Cabrera

And now that I have filled my glass with dry champagne
or with whatever spirits that within this bar remain,
I lift it high and drink for you and me,
for long lost days before we tasted grief or pain,
and for freedom for those souls in dire need…

My voice sings harmony with those from far above
who wander here as sweet, eternal guests,
reminding me of those that I once loved,
can I be now forgetting all the rest?

Have I forgotten love?
It’s for the best…
The champagne now has spread all through my head,
and feeling warm sensations so desired,
I can forget how old I am and tired…

Within this bar I still can hear yesterday’s songs
that nourished all the cynics I inspired.
They’re now no longer wild, or old,
they’ve gone to join, with faithful hearts, celestial choirs…

And now that I’ve no longer childish thoughts,
or nothing more, I’ve really nothing left.
I leave with little more than what I’ve brought
to other worlds of peace I do expect…

My grave? A silent monument of marble.
My soul? A happy traveller through dreams.
I still remain a penitent, though artful,
I’ve never really been what I have seemed…

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Life is a series of experiences and of people, places and things. But after we have done all that which once encouraged us to seek, learn and have, we must conclude that it’s the spirit within us that survives and that everything else remains as just a memory. I write for the sake of beauty and of art, and not of my life or thoughts.
