I Live In…
written by: Aniedi Ita Bassey
I live in a village, closer to the morgue,
where dead bodies are deposited
more than money in the bank.
I live in a community
where the elders pray for death,
but the young ones occupy the graves.
I live in a city of dead dreams,
full of dreamers whose hopes
have never seen the light of day.
I live in a State
where we pray for a better tomorrow,
only to be reminded of how
terrible yesterday already was.
I live in a country
where the law only favours the rich,
while the average are left behind bars
without a voice, without a chance.
I live in a country
where the police, who should save us,
rob us more than thieves,
by day with guns, by night with silence.
I live in a nation of silence,
where injustice screams louder
than the cries of its broken children,
and truth is buried before it is born.
But I also live in hope,
thin as it may be, that one day
we will rise from the graves we were given,
and finally breathe what freedom truly feels like. Shalom.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
This poem is dedicated to those who have lost hope. It is to remind them that there is still hope.
