It Didn’t Feel Like Deafness

It Didn’t Feel Like Deafness

written by: Johnch

They came with their lips moving
But there was nothing I could hear
Still they walked and talked
As if there was nothing of concern

In their Khaki, in their battle gear
The sergeant in the lead
His mouth held wide, florid face
But still I could not hear

Silent stomp in the rhythm of their march
I could see the dust in regular puffs
Curl around their marching feet
Trailing a kilometre to the rear

And in the distance those dun behemoths
Ground their way with their one black eye
Searching, the black eyed buildings
The rubble deep streets

Then in their awful silence
Plumed a red and black puff
It didn’t feel like deafness
It felt a lot like silent death.

I knelt in my silent prayer
Seeking a salvation, an end
To this tyranny

Those silent lips moving,
Those dust shrouded feet in silent march
Those dun coloured behemoths

Unconcerned.
