Journal Entry

July 7th
For the last two nights I’ve heard a persistent tap-tap-tapping on my bedroom window.
On the first night, I was certain I was hearing things, the hour was late, the sound was low.
What could that tapping be, I asked myself, surely not
a bird at this late hour?
I heard it again, the sound was more incessant, a tad stronger and rather dour.
I was too afraid to open the curtains to take a look. It was pitch dark outside.
Eventually the tapping stopped. I thanked the heavens, for strange noises I cannot abide.
On the second night, the tapping began once more, though soft at first.
Then growing louder and more dogged. The unnerving tapping got worse.
It ended with a loud BANG! Causing me to nearly jump out of my skin.
The sudden noise so loud, it could have woke the dead with its frightful din.
If I wasn’t afraid before, I was certainly terrified now. Who, or what, was this nocturnal foe?
And a better question yet, how did it reach my bedroom’s second story window?

August 4th
It’s been almost a month, with fortunately nothing unusual happening.
No disembodied hands, late at night, on glass, in cadence, tap-tap-tapping…

September 14th
Tonight I heard the tapping again. Certainly more persistent than ever before.
I know you may think it’s just an insect and will walk
away from my story quite bored.
But the sound was incessant, with five quick knocks,
long fingernails on glass, tap-tapping.
And despite my supposed imaginings, I know the unmistakable sound of fingernails rapping.

November 4th
The noise now haunts my sleep, my dreams disturbed. Waking me up in the middle of the night.
That tenacious tap-tap-tapping. The sound echoing in
my ears. How long must I endure this fright…
