Letter Writers’ Brigade
written by: Julie Pratt
Dear Maria,
You don’t know me, though we may
have passed in the aisles at Aldi’s—
isn’t it crazy how prices keep rising?
On top of that, the funds were cut
for my job at Blue Creek Elementary,
where I tutored third-graders
who were falling behind.
It about broke my heart when
the kids cried on my last day—
which is why I’m writing to you
about the upcoming election.
I’m not asking for money.
I’m writing to save our country.
Every one of our kids deserves
a good education, and each person
a doctor when they need one.
I want our streams to be safe
for fishing and swimming.
I want our Mexican restaurant
to reopen.
I want all of us to have a say
in our government. Voting isn’t perfect,
but it’s the only way to
include all perspectives.
And that’s why I’m writing
to you, Maria, and ninety-nine others,
to remind you to vote because
the kids are counting on us.
We’re down to the wire.
If we don’t show up now,
there may not be a next time.
Sincerely,
Ayesha
