Memories of Ago, Delicious

Memories of Ago, Delicious

written by: Franci Eugenia Hoffman

Now I remember
those blissful days
we’d sit neath the
old oak tree during
sultry days of summer.

Time passed too quickly
as I listened to stories
from yesteryear. Every tale
better than the last one; I
yearned for more, wishing
they would never end.

Across the way was citified,
with skyscrapers and such.
Too much hustle bustle for
my liking; I’d rather sit
amid nature, and listen to
grandpa carry on; some tales
factual tidbits, and others were
cock-and-bull exaggerations.

Still, every word uttered was
magical. Sometimes, I noticed
a tear in his tired gray eyes,
then there were times his eyes
twinkled with a mischievous
glint.

Those days meant everything to me;
as time flies by, I feel my memory fading.
The effects of aging are nearing as
the autumn of my life thieves my
vibrancy.

One somber and gray morning,
sitting alone without grandpa,
I found myself wishing to recall times we
spent together. While sipping hot coffee;
grandpa loved his coffee so strong
you could stand a spoon up in it, just one
whiff of the bold and rich brew brought
on forgotten memories.

Oh, those were the days, when
we had face to face conversations.
Life seemed so much simpler. Yes,
those were the days, I yearn for.
