Milestones

written by: Chris Callard

A new year, another birthday,
what a snore anymore.
Trying to ignore the next turn of the page,
but nobody listens to your
sluggish stage directions.
Champagne, midnight kiss, a gift, some cake.
Thanks, not ungrateful, just bored.
I’m swell, I am, even with
the swelling in my ankles.
And life does sparkle, don’t want to be
down in the mouth.
Life is truly yabba dabba do.
An abalone resting on a beautiful shell.
Sometimes, though, all I can muster is
oh well, oh well, oh well.
