  1. Where do you originate from?

I was born in North Cornwall but grew up in Harpenden in Hertfordshire, a small town (then) with a claim to fame for having one half of the iconic British comedy duo Morecambe and Wise as a resident. I only ever saw Eric once in the flesh in the 20 years I lived there, but still have that visual imprinted in my memory like a photograph.

  1. What do you cherish most about the place you call home?

Through a strange quirk of fate, I returned to the county of my birth 40 years ago, but to the south coast, just a few miles from where my great-great-grandfather and his family had lived in the 1840s. My village lies in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and I am blessed to have lush meadows and unspoilt deciduous woods within a stone’s throw, and a choice of footpaths leading to the South West Coast Path. A dog owner, I walk every day unless the weather is horrendously windy or wet.

  1. What ignites your creativity?

Anything can inspire me; a word or expression enters my head while out walking or getting the dinner and I have to write it down. Personal memories, a news report or events on the world stage can be the spark that sets me off. I wrote a poem about a walnut after I found one on the path on my way home. Anything goes, and I never know what will be next.

  1. Do you have a favorite word, and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?

Adopted is a word I look forward to seeing, as I volunteer for a local dog rescue. I’m not sure it lends itself to a poetic phrase, but here goes:

Her story of rescue from the puppy farm broke many a heart; I adopted her, and together we rewrote the remaining chapters of her life.

  1. What is your pet peeve?

I hate waste, especially food waste. There was no such thing as ‘leftovers’ when I was young, the war years and rationing too fresh in everyone’s minds. How people can throw away perfectly good food when so many are starving is unfathomable to me. Waste of resources in general too, such as water and power, also annoy me. Scenes in a TV drama showing someone standing nonchalantly next to a wide open fridge have me screaming in my head ‘Shut the door!’, even though I know it’s not real. Cruelty and exploitation of animals and vulnerable humans is also high on my list of peeves, also the damage the human race is doing to this planet and its innocent inhabitants. I sound like a right grump, don’t I?

  1. How would you describe the essence of Glo Curl?

Far too sensitive for my own good to the plight of unloved animals and the ills of the world.
