Talpidae’s Top Table

Talpidae’s Top Table

written by: Clive Grewcock

Pushing through to the surface
then collapsing on his back,
Talpidae had finally arrived.

“At last” he wheezed while rubbing
his mounding tight belly,
“so this is what it is like –

up here in the open air,
the wind calling ‘hello’
the sunshine baking my smile.

I will call this place
The Top Table.”
Mole knew things were just so.

“This is where the brightest butterflies
and the sweetest birds take flight –
tangled in conversation.”

Talpidae looked at The Top Table,
smiled widely – knowing
when he tunnels away

he will be taking something
of the colours, the lace,
the warm glow to brighten his everyday.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Written in celebration of a wedding, hence ‘The Top Table,’ and the joy such an event shares with the gifts of nature. A note that Talpidae is the mammalian classification that includes the mole.
