That You Shouldn’t Have to Understand

That You Shouldn’t Have to Understand

written by: Mark

There’s a soft sigh at my shoulder
warm
beckoning

that fades to a rasp
cold and
threatening

The room in which I sit
is locked, but the whisper
is pale and persistent

louder than the wash of light
so weakly insignificant

that I can see very little
beyond the key in my hand
and the note
still unwritten
that you shouldn’t have to understand
