The Mask of Love

The Mask of Love

written by: Ed Sams

For Valentine’s Day she sent an ornament
A gift for her lover who kept far away
Then waited his reply on lover’s day
Back came the mask she sent
The Mask of Love
was pasteboard
On a stick
(Holes
for
Eyes)
And one
Teardrop slick
Where sad lips
Would admit
No lies
In the shallow face
deep eyes and wet
might show regret
She still saw grace
If she gave the mask a shake
The two lips seemed to quake
Then it looked like breath
At other times
Like death.
