Unwanted Gift

Unwanted Gift

written by: Abagail Summers

I want to open my eyes
But the spirits will not let me.
They haunt me at night
Pull me into their worlds
And refuse to let me go.

None speak
But they don’t have to
I see the pain within their eyes.
They need me.

But I am not theirs.
I am of the living.
They chase me,
As I try to find my way out.

Punished by this gift
that I never wanted
Summoned by their eagerness

Tortured through the night,
Switching to one side,
Then the other,
Waiting for daybreak
So, the nightmares can cease.

This pull they have on me,
won’t let me go,
I’m powerless,
Helpless in this underworld.

Gasping for air
Clawing, fighting,
To return to my body

Wake up!
