Watch and Learn

I see him often as I
pass by
the rundown grocery store

He sits alone on
the front stairs
by the entry, right next
to the trashcan

picking up cigarette butts
and crushing them
and ripping them open
to scrounge whatever
leftover tobacco he can find

After he gathers enough
he rolls it into
a whole cigarette

lights it

and drags from it
just enough to make the
burning last

then he places it
into an open wound
in his right knee

The more I look at
it the more
it resembles a smiling
mouth

feminine

red lips

It was her
he spoke to all this time

and what beautiful words
he shares

It’s poetry

It’s love

It’s best to leave them
alone
for they are happier
in their own world
than I’ll ever be and simply
don’t need anything

All I’m gonna do
is watch and
learn

Watch and
learn
