Silenced

Silenced

written by: Maggie Watson

Silenced for years as part of my compliance
to hand over complete control of my soul to you.
As your power grew, my spirit diminished,
so I withdrew.
From myself into a protective shell,
a makeshift prison of sorts.
As a last resort to keep myself safe,
yet your words bore through the walls.
Now you are gone.
My voice, which I use for good to inspire others,
no longer smothered by your disdain.
I still flail against the bars of that prison.
Some days, I break free, on others,
I burn in the angry words
of your disdain.
Our demons we can never outrun
until we kill them one by one.
