A Heavenly Peace

A Heavenly Peace

Her voice was angelic
as she hummed through holiday dinners
taut with toxic tension when things
turned sideways and Dad stormed off

and everyone scattered
except me and Aunt Aurora
with her gold-spun locks, with her name
that means goddess, means dawn, a rising-sun song.

She’d hum a soft, sweet Silent Night
like nothing in our world was wrong.
Her lilt drew me in like a moth
to a flame. Her patience and peace

spinning silky soundwaves,
her calm wisdom illuminating the darkness
like a firefly. I’d close my eyes.
I’d sway and smile and wish

to be her daughter instead of her niece.
This is what the holidays mean for me
the time of year I still seek solace
in my aunt’s heavenly hum.
