Hope

Hope

I’ve called myself an Ally
I’m prepared to make that stand
Inclusion and diversity
Have to be the job at hand
We have to live and let live
To respect opposing views
To stand up for equality
That’s just part of what we’ll lose
We thought we’d made more progress
We thought we’d come so far
We didn’t know they’d kept their hatred
Buried in a jar
They took it out in darkness
And they fed it with their souls
Until they found a kindred spirit
Showing in the polls
That spark became a flaming brand
Fast moving firestorm
And still we thought the days ahead
Would be both safe and warm
The truth still finds us petrified
Shocked with disbelief
We’ve been set back a hundred years
From turning that new leaf
They say time will bring us forward
But it might just bring us down
The right-wing Cross fanatics
Would just love to see us drown
We might not all survive this
But the pendulum swings both ways
I can only hope I’ll live
To see those better days
