Today a Friend Asked Me

Today, a Friend Asked Me

written by: Aastha Verma

Today, a friend asked me,
“Is it possible to fall in love after a heartbreak?”
I paused for a moment and softly replied,
“Yes, it is.”
He looked at me, curious, and asked,
“Did you?”
I smiled faintly,
“No… not yet.”
He pressed again,
“Then how can you be so sure?”
I glanced at the sky and said,
“Because I still feel love inside me.
Every time I see a couple holding hands,
I yearn for that feeling again —
not just the romance,
but the comfort of being understood,
the warmth of someone choosing you every day,
the joy in small, ordinary moments shared with someone who matters.
That longing tells me I haven’t given up on love —
just learned to be patient with it.”
But this time, I’ll be cautious —
not scared, just wiser.
The first time you fall in love,
you don’t know about heartbreak.
You don’t see the red flags.
You don’t understand the weight of goodbye.
But after that first pain, you learn.
You learn what you want,
what you need,
and what you’ll never tolerate again.
So yes, I’ll fall in love again —
when the time is right,
when I’m ready.
But this time, a little more carefully.
And while I wait for that love,
I won’t forget to love myself, too —
to be gentle with my healing,
to celebrate my growth,
and to remember that I am already whole,
even before anyone else arrives.”
