Goodbye, Saigon

Goodbye, Saigon

written by: Hanh Chau

Leaving on a train captured
by the last word of a farewell
far away from the beautiful place
of Saigon

Bring in every shedding teardrop
with an unfolding story to tell
It reminds me of the generous
and the warm greeting of the people

The embracing of the culture
comes with heritage pride
a place I am influenced by
my native tongue and speech

My mind ponders at the gaze of
the glowing moon at night
my heart fills with loneliness
of leaving my homeland

I am known as a stranger
with an unfamiliar name
in a barren place
where emotion resides
word without a form
with a language barrier
instilled a sense of loss
in the hope of searching

For a place that holds with
promise and close to the
heart like home reminds
the joy that it brings

The lifting of the spirit of love
to set one’s anguish free
with the embrace of peace
carry with indelible memory
