Ascension, a poem by Lamont Neal at Spillwords.com

Ascension

Ascension

written by: Lamont Neal

A connection to the Earth—
I feel the power beneath my feet.
Stable, supported by the ground itself,
the Earth’s strength now mine.
Balanced, standing tall,
free to move—
forward, back, left, or right.
I smile, aware of choice.

Floating on the surface
of an ocean in motion,
feeling the lift and drop of waves,
the push and pull of current.
Depth doesn’t matter
when you stay afloat,
when your stroke is steady,
when your lungs are full.
In this shared connection,
we choose a destination together.

A mountain in the distance,
its peak cutting into the sky—
unfathomable height,
a perilous climb.
The distance closes.
Handholds prove reliable, abundant.
A lightness takes hold—
more float than force.
What once was impossible
becomes a moment.
