Not Just For A Day

Not Just For A Day

the scream of night
mingling in the encrusted forest
spread by creeping light
the slow dying of thirst.

The footsteps crush
supine trees
the winds rush-
a battered swarm of desperate bees.

the darkening sea
widens like a swelling maw,
consuming, consuming me
not just for the day, but evermore.

Like a yawn
sodden dreams depart,
mouth open in a scream
into which sunken souls dart.
