Long After The Argument

Long After The Argument

written by: John Grey

The night is restless.
A scarred silver moon
rests on the winter hill.
The fog of her words
scrambles the sense of the window-pane
while that conjured up
by the tryst of warm and cold
merely melts a tree trunk or two.
It’s close on midnight
and he’s taken up sleep
as the best cure for pain
but she’s reluctant to let dreams
give out their happy endings
like children’s toys.
No, if the hurt wants her,
it knows where she is.
Rough wind almost tears their boat
from its lake mooring.
Want to know how he could say such a thing.
Just look at the boat.
It rocks violently.
It lifts unwillingly.
It drops back with a gaudy splash.
That’s how.
Such a poor battered vessel.
But at least it’s putting on a show.
