A Hint of The Season

A Hint of The Season

written by: Veronika Kordikowski

One… two… three boxes,
Advent calendars shoved together,
Beside an assortment of Halloween candies!

All this stuff at the entrance to our grocery store,
Come, come in and buy so much more!

Already?! Wait…
But it’s only October 23!

One… two… three lit wicks,
Flickering in this frosted glass,
From the top of our potbelly fireplace,
Cast dark shadows on the pale white walls.

One… two… three Gerbera flowers,
Our Thanksgiving gift,
Shimmering within that crystal vase.

This holiday… that holiday… and many more.
Enchanting… Enjoying… Enduring!

But come on! Really?
Merchandise this early?
Breathe! Take it all in!

Christmas is my favourite family holiday!
Holidays that come and go so quickly,
Let’s take time to slow down and enjoy.

First Halloween, Then Thanksgiving,
Finally, is Christmas Time,
That’s the correct order of things!

As December approaches,
Time to begin preparations,
Our beloved Christmas traditions!

One… two… three pairs of warm socks,
Our Purchases matched by the store Manager,
We deliver them to the local homeless shelter!

One… two… three decorations,
Hang here, up there, and over there,
Dancing and oscillating on the tree.

I need… I want… I must have,
Holly… Carols…Candles… Gingerbread cookies,
Sugar plums… and Mistletoe!

Buy this, buy that, and buy into the madness of it all,
Buy into Consumerism,
Having things equates love!

It’s your decision to buy,
Or pass the compulsion by,
Or Buy In, feel great! Spend even more!
