A Penny For Your Memories

A Penny For Your Memories

written by: Joseph Mannino

Goodbye, Penny, rest in peace
It was good while it lasted
But now you are deceased.
Once a good luck charm
Now a museum piece
Your legacy now archived
In the coin purse of history.

Farewell, Penny, keep the change
Your time has finally come
But the memories remain
It was all left up to chance
Heads or tails, the name of the game
Just a simple adjustment, but
My loafers will never be the same

So long, Penny, don’t be blue
It’s time we both move on
I promise to remember you
Piggy banks and penny slots
Bitter copper residue
Tarnished green with salty tears
From the old woman in the shoe

Thank you, Penny, for the memory
The time spent jingling around
For rounding off my treasury
And funding so many thoughts
For keeping us flush each century
Making cents of all my nonsense
And so fueling this silly reverie.
