A Woodpecker Song

A Woodpecker Song

written by: Phyllis Souza

Maple trees display their leaves, flowers bloom, and the air fills with the fragrance of honeysuckle.
I’m sitting on the porch in my old rocking chair, listening to a woodpecker peck on a nearby tree.
Peck. Peck. Peck.
A little grey mouse scurries by and hides under the house.
I tap my fingernails on the chair’s wooden arm to create a harmonious sound.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
A graceful feline, its lithe form slinks towards the unsuspecting bird.
I puff out my cheeks and blow, creating a whirlwind.
The woodpecker stops and surveys its world.
The cat runs off.
The woodpecker continues to peck.
What a day to hear a woodpecker’s song!
