Better Late Than Never

Better Late Than Never

written by: Melissa Lemay

“Better late than never,”
said the poem to the bear,
as chill fell through the forest
in the dry November air.

The geese were leaving lately,
off to their southern abodes,
though they couldn’t quite be sure:
weather to stay? Weather to go?

The bear hadn’t begun yet
to thicken for his winter coat.
The poem didn’t tell him why,
after all, it was just a note.

It is a common misconception
poems are just to perform –
this one, a single couplet, said:
“the globe is getting warm.”
