Child’s Play

As a little boy doing what little boys do,
playing with toys
and games for two,
did you ever play house
with the girl next door?
And did Daddy tell you love
was a little bit more
than holding hands watching tv
on her living room floor?
And when he told you all about the birds and bees,
about someday being a groom
and your bride to be,
who’d you imagine as the love of your life,
did you ever think of me
when you thought of a wife?
A teenage boy growing into a man,
getting into all the trouble that young men can,
did you still play house
with the girl next door?
And did Daddy tell you love was a little bit more
than having sex in the backseat
of your hand-me-down Ford?
And when you started thinking about the love of your life,
of settling down
and doing what’s right,
did you ever think of me
when you thought of a wife?
As a little girl doing what little girls do,
playing dress up with my dollies
and having tea for two,
I never played house with the boy next door.
I always knew love was a little bit more
than holding hands watching tv
on the living room floor.
Mama read me stories about love so true,
so I waited for my prince,
I waited for you
A silly little girl even at sixteen,
still dreaming of my prince
coming for me,
so I never played house with the boy next door,
’cause he wasn’t the prince
I saved myself for.
Don’t know where he is,
or who he’ll be,
but I’ll know him when I see him,
most definitely.
And when I saw you,
I did, I instantly knew,
you were my prince,
my dream come true
Whenever you imagined
the rest of your life,
did you ever think of me
as the love of that life?
‘Cause even when I didn’t know,
I always knew,
you were my prince,
my dream come true
