Dissolution

First there was open marriage. Now it’s separation. Not the legal kind, just a trial. “I still love you but I’m not in love with you,” he said. His eyes widened as if stunned by his own admission. His face crumbled into his hands and he began sobbing the ugly cry. I handed him a tissue.
“It’s so hard, marriage,” he cried.
“Life is a process,” I answered, patting his back.

Suddenly, he grabbed his middle, doubled over, and went limp, his eyes rolling back in his head. His pulse was faint. Had the mere idea of leaving me killed my husband? How would I explain that to the authorities? I grappled with the problem for a moment but then he snapped to.

“There’s this thing called friends with benefits we could try,” he said, pulling off my wedding ring.
