Edge of Night

Edge of Night

Footprints slowly disappear
from sands with each wavelet.
Shore birds feed along the beach;
outer rocks bristle with seaweed.
Pelicans skim along the waves,
searching for a new spot to fish.
I walk from the large window;
while turning out the rooms light.
Walking to the kitchen, I put
down a bit of food for the cat.
It’s time to dream, to fantasize
about knights on horseback
saving a maiden by the castle.
About flying high into the sky,
chasing rainbows and falling
stars late into the night sky.
As I doze off, the cat cuddles
my feet and I drift away until
the sunrise lays a kiss on my cheek.
