Find the Magic Wherever You Are

In full sun I find Whakapipi,
the bright gate on the mountain;
as I gaze up, it looks down at me
made clear on a backdrop of green.

I am the magic of houses in symmetry
arranged in checkered streets;
the anticipation of craftsmen’s emblems
holds the arcane mountain aligned.

Hermetic winks catch the gleam
of chance light on stray metal,
and divulge a secret from the sun
snatched in a glance meant only for me.

Scouts play games with Morse
on the mountain slopes at dusk,
light signals cast into gathered night
mimic the secret of gold.

I am the lettered spell at the door
no man may decipher; scattered sigils
flutter their way on Cardinal winds,
through cold archways no word may tell.

That is the way to build a world,
pattern old streets once walked by kings;
the arcanum of my strength enfolds
the chalice remembered by the bold.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

Whakapipi is a lookout point on the slopes of the iconic mountain Te Aroha in New Zealand, which overlooks the town of the same name.
