Flip the Card
written by: Phyllis Souza
This New Year signifies endings as the familiar fades away: breath, sound, sight, taste, sleep.
When midnight strikes, time seems to stop. That moment marks a shift—an entrance into a new era of endings. You can choose any year after 2000 as your starting point.
Beyond that point, everyone’s journey becomes unique, unpredictable, and personal.
In this quiet moment after the change, ask yourself: Do you feel empty? When you reach out, can you sense others nearby, or are you alone in this emptiness?
If you’re reading this now, you are still here—still untouched by darkness, at least for now. But as the silence deepens, ask yourself: Is your neighbor present too, or have they already fallen into what lies beyond?
Look out the window—what catches your eye?
Don’t visualize lights—the street and windows are entirely dark.
Now, as darkness settles, something unseen and mysterious lingers outside, waiting to be noticed.
A change is happening.
Are you present in the moment, the second of death?
In silence, the world waits on the edge. Is it peaceful, or just waiting for your response?
Draw a card as if unlocking the meaning of what lies beyond the threshold.
What does it say?
At this point, you might think it’s nonsense.
But is it really that unlikely?
Let me invite you again: Draw once more. Only you will uncover the meaning.
Remember: you poisoned the little dog next door for barking too much.
Are you covering your ears? Lost your voice?
You took the grocery money from your mother’s purse and blamed your little brother.
Maybe you’ll smile. Your brother is gone; he’s waiting for you. Do you want me to reveal more?
It’s the New Year; you drank too much and drove your car…
Three jurors are currently deliberating on a verdict.
Here’s a dark secret: the jurors are dead—you caused that.
What do you think they will say?
