Forgiving and Forgetting

Forgiving and Forgetting

written by: Dawn Pisturino

Whispers on the wind
Sent sweet bouquets and promises
Of unfulfilled desires,
Caressing resting embers
Into walls of wildfires
That shook my heart awake.
You called to me and said,
It’s time to join the living.
Your love is far from dead.
But forgiving and forgetting
Are distinct and separate things.
The memories are blinding.
They blacken out the joy
And highlight all the pain.
Forgive? Forgive deliberate
Cruelty? Forgive the mental games
That left me crying in the night
And wondering who to blame?
So easy now for you to say,
Who disappeared in a fit of rage
And wants to come back home again!
Let the wildfires burn the past away.
But forgiving and forgetting is not for me to say.
Only Time, with her infinite wisdom,
Can take it all away.
