From My Window Pane

From My Window Pane

written by: Illustrious Da Poet

I watched it all from my window pane,
A flash of light, then a fiery rain,
A big black cloud, rising tall,
Covering my town like a dark, heavy shawl.

Mama said, “Stay away from the glass,”
But I peeked through a crack as the danger passed,
It smelled funny, sharp and mean,
Like bleach in the air, making everything unclean.

The sky turned grey, then a dark, thick black,
I heard the sirens, saw the smoke roll back,
It floated over houses, the streets we play,
Why is it always like this in my Conyers, GA?

They say it happened before, way back in ’04,
But here it is again, knocking on our door,
And I wonder, what’s coming next, twenty years from now,
When I’m all grown up—will they still allow

These black clouds to rise and hide the sun?
Will we still be stuck here, nowhere to run?
I’m just a little girl, but I understand,
This is our home, this is our land.

Mama says we built this place with our sweat,
So why are we the ones always left with regret?
I dream of a future where the air stays clear,
Where I can open my window without any fear.

But tonight I just watch, my face to the glass,
Hoping this cloud, like the others, will pass,
And maybe one day, we’ll all stand tall,
No more dark clouds hanging over us all.
