Getting On

Getting On

written by: Anthony John Ward

You know you’re getting on,
When you notice your parents resemble your grandparents.
With that same shift in posture and childlike glint in their eye,
And you find yourself remembering their memories for them.

You know you’re getting on,
When the things you once found exciting have become boring,
What you once found boring have become all the more interesting,
The excitement replenished by appreciation.

You know you’re getting on,
When looking up to those actors on the screen,
Who were once so much older than you,
Are now appearing all the more younger.

You know you’re getting on,
When looking back over summer’s shoulder,
At what appears to be eternity
Is now looking less infinite.
