Hatched
written by: D.M. Velay
You called me into the world
with a prayer
the work of a mere moment
whispered through the dizziness
of my descent, I tumbled and
fell into twigs precariously
holding above the pitted earth
I fed voraciously, racing against
my sisters, until I felt the air razor
sharp across my shoulders,
then the fierce longing,
like a spring uncoiling,
and my first flight,
feet curled, wings unfurled
following your tail feathers
up into the wide arc of the sky
