I Defend My Mother

I Defend My Mother

written by: Mohammad Erfun Amin

I defend my mother,
for letting me grow
like a flower,
to remind the world of beauty.

I defend my mother,
for teaching me to sing
in the tune of nightingales,
so hunters would stop and listen.

I defend my mother,
for making me a home
in the midst of arsonists,
a candle still defies the dark.

I defend my mother,
for helping in making my wings
to fly like a bird of prey;
survivor, seer, unbroken.

I defend my mother,
for daring to bear me
into a world, where
being human is resistance.

She gave me life,
not to escape the world,
but to confront it,
with thorns, with song, with fire, with wings.
