I Never Loved You

I Never Loved You

If ever you loved me,
Amongst the clouds and mountains,
Amongst the burning fires,
The boiling rivers,
The blackened lands,
You loved me beyond light.

If ever I loved you,
I could not accept the touch
Of your damaged hands.
Your broken limbs,
Your covered eyes.
I never loved you.

It was then I spoke and
Your face turned towards me.
My skin burned at your
Sightless gaze.
I looked away.
I had always loved you.

There, I’ve said it.
Love has broken both of us.
Your body, my mind.
Destruction and illusion,
A game we played and lost
Together – broken.

But what of love?
If that is what remains,
Changed and unchanged.
Cold embers of a burnt-out fire,
It remains the same
I still love you.
