In Carnations

When you have found
A small patch of ground
Brush away any weeds
And plant some seeds.
Pat them down lightly.
Water them slightly.
In no time at all
Shoots fragile and small
All on their own
Have risen and grown.
Sunshine and showers
Turn them into flowers
To delight and please
And dance in the breeze
All Summer long.
Their perfume is strong
So butterfly and bee
Flutter by to see
To visit and to take
The pollen they make.
As they come and they go
They help everything grow

With Autumn’s shiver
The blooms fade and wither;
Withdraw into the deep
To rest and to sleep.
In warm earth below
Under a blanket of snow
They tuck in their heads
In their own flowerbeds.

Do you, like me, wonder
If those seeds, dormant under
Curfew through long wintry hours,
All dream that they are flowers?
