It Would Be Home

It Would Be Home

written by: Jack Galmitz

If it was not this way. If it was another way.
If we were found and taken home.
If we had a home. If there was a home.
If we could point the way and the car drove.
If our pointing was good and the driver understood.
If he got us home and it was our home.
If the key turned, we would be at home.
We could walk around. We would know our way.
We would know the rooms.
The polished floors would be great fun
to slide on in our stockinged feet. The family dog
would come and greet us. The window glass
would be so clean as to be transparent.
Raindrops would stand out and hold
the little globes of streetlights.
We would marvel at the sight.
We could reach out and touch the night. Hold it tight.
If we were together, you and I.
If there were two of us for a long time.
If we knew each other’s thoughts
without needing to speak. It would be right.
If it could be this way and not another way.
Then we would be home together.
