Kaleidoscope Wings

Kaleidoscope Wings

written by: Sharona Reeves

A butterfly stopped by as I sat idle and numb.
Randomly, without hesitation, and without any solid explanation,
I began to cry.

Its wings opened and closed …. gracefully, slowly
inhale… exhale…
The tears blurred my vision as I heard the word “breathe.”

I focused with intention, entranced by the measured rise and fall, each motion a quiet whisper: inhale… exhale…
Within my vision, the colors blended, forming kaleidoscope wings.
Air filled my lungs …inhale
and I began to breathe again …exhale.

The butterfly stayed for a while, in sync with my breaths,
each inhale pulling in the weight I’d carried too long, each exhale letting some of it go.

I sat in a silent reckoning
as the kaleidoscope wings coached my breathing, tears flowing unapologetically,
one for every harsh word, every unforgiving season.
The butterfly lingered with a gentle reminder to let go, and within that moment, there was quiet growth.

The kaleidoscope wings had taught me to breathe again, and from this day forward, I breathe to let go.
