Little Mouse
written by: Ernest Federspiel
A little mouse came in from the cold
He was soon following his sniffing nose
He scurried across the kitchen floor
He knew he had smelt that smell before
From the cupboard, he ran lickety-split quick
He went unnoticed, as fast as a clock’s tick
He sniffed around under the kitchen drain
He couldn’t find the cheese he’d come to claim
So he peeked out to see if anyone was around
Sidestepping the trap beside him on the ground
Over by the fridge, he again stopped to smell
Swiss cheese on rye was close, he could tell
Up on the counter, he spotted it sitting all alone
A month’s worth of meals calling him home
How to get up there he didn’t have a clue
He had to stop and think for a minute or two
While he was thinking he caught another scent
It smelled like chili with a rosemary hint
The little mouse knew that soon he must eat
This here kitchen was slap full of tasty treats
Over the chair and up the table he did climb
Looking for a snack to satisfy his little mind
The table lay bare and the counter too far away
He had to make a decision and do it without delay
He got a leaping start and jumped into the air
He landed on the stove with half an inch to spare
The mouse was delighted, the buffet was now his
No sad ending here, the mouse took care of his biz
